Create Law-Free Zones for testing business ideas

Starting a business is a headache and starting something that hasn't been done before is extremely difficult with current laws, by-laws, zoning requirements, permits, inspections etc.

So here is my idea: Create Law-Free zones available for all Canadian citizens. I do not mean a place were drug lords and violent criminals are free to run wild. I mean a physical place where innovators and potential entrepreneurs can go and put up structures, test products, and test new food production methods without all the red tape and current laws. A place where someone can go with their new idea and borrow some space for some time and test it out assuming all risk. If it doesn't work they don't loose but if it does work they can pursue it without the expense of trying to get through the red tape because that is what stops most people.

Think of this ideas like university study rooms. You can book a block of time and study at no cost. When you are done the space is available for someone else. Canada has a lot of unused land that can easily support this sort of thing.

If someone creates a new method of transportation they cannot test it on our roads because of the legal issues. If they want to build it and test it there are many laws against it. But if they had a place to test and create without laws they can create something new and then conform or get advice on new laws.

Using existing technologies in a manner which has not been done before, Canada could start cost-effectively growing food that is currently imported.  This would make Canada more self-sufficient, reduce our greenhouse gas footprint, create local jobs and create a profitable local business.  Elements of the model could also be used in other countries to make food production less expensive and more efficient globally.

Food produced would be free of herbicides and pesticides.

What is needed is the support to put together a production scale pilot operation.  Capital costs would be recovered in a couple of years.  The challenge is getting funding for the pilot.

Canadian forest will be the future source of many global bio-products, the forest resource is ultimately one of the only renewable resources to supply our future needs, we need  to communicate the importance of this industry and the role it will play  to ensure sustainability. We need to develop program that will encourage young generation to invest in this field, help develop it and make Canada more successful.

At the end of August in San Francisco, the Inaugural  Global Grand Challenge Awards will be given. https://exponential.singularityu.org/summit/ggc/

This will be three days of world innovation leaders gathered for the Singularity University Global Summit. If we want to attract talent, we have to make sure they can see us! Catalyst Agri-Innovations Society is a finalist in the environmental category, and will be presenting their "Technology Meets Permaculture" program. I hope there will be some other official Canadian representation there!

The National Industrial Symbiosis Program (NISP Canada) is an 11 year old organization out of the UK that is established as one of the best ways to achieve all the things a country wants. They drive value, by eliminating waste and wastefulness, delivering jobs and revenue for businesses. Then they circle back, and add up the positive environmental impacts. Canada is the 23rd country to join, so the world will be watching! We can leverage the ISED program, with the Environment and Climate Change program, and the AAFC program, by connecting with the 5 ministry team aligned in BC for NISP. Please join them either July 20 or Aug 3 to learn more.

More Worker Cooperatives

Worker Cooperatives are democratically-run enterprises which have been proven through many studies to be more sustainable than traditional, capitalist-owner enterprises.

Because the people who own the business are those that work in the business, they have several advantages to capitalist, top-down enterprises:

  • More likely to keep work in the community where the business is based (and not offshore jobs), as the owners have a direct interest in the community (as they live there)
  • A fair and equitable distribution of profit, therefore enriching local communities instead of shareholders
  • As every worker is also an owner, this brings true democracy and democratic values to the workplace, where adults spend most of their lives.

Cooperatives should be the new standard in business organization. Let's have Canada lead the way!
