Replication studies

Question:How do we make best use of our science and research strengths?
on 06/28/2016

There have been many headlines in recent years where researchers have proved unable to replicate seminal studies in many fields. (A lot of the focus of this reporting has been in the social sciences, but I don't see any reason to believe this would be limited to these areas.) This seems to be a result of academic pressures on researchers to do something 'new' as well as a difficulty in publishing this type of result (or even negative results in new areas). Maybe Canada could provide a public service to the people of the world by taking on more effort in replication studies or adapt our funding and publication processes to be more friendly to replication work...this isn't the sexiest area of science, but more than anything else, replication of results is the crucial foundation on which the entire structure of scientific progress rests.
